Najlepszy sposobem na dokładne wyczyszczenie stalówki jest umieszczenie uprzednio wykręconej całej sekcji przedniej w szklance z wodą i pozostawienie na kilka godzin aż do całkowitego rozpuszczenia atramentu w kanalikach stalówki. Inną metodą jest użycie tłoczka. Umieszczamy go w sekcji przedniej, zanurzamy stalówkę w wodzie i używając tłoczka nabieramy wody (tak samo jak nabiera się atrament).
