Generally 14K gold is the best, 10K gold and palladium silver are also surprisingly good, 18K gold is good but not the very best; and while steel nibs are much less costly, they can still be very good indeed. Najlepszy sposobem na dokładne wyczyszczenie stalówki jest umieszczenie uprzednio wykręconej całej sekcji przedniej w szklance z wodą i pozostawienie na kilka godzin aż do całkowitego rozpuszczenia atramentu w kanalikach stalówki. Inną metodą jest użycie tłoczka. Umieszczamy go w sekcji przedniej, zanurzamy stalówkę w wodzie i używając tłoczka nabieramy wody (tak samo jak nabiera się atrament). Następnie usuwamy wodę za pomocą tłoczka a czynność powtarzamy co najmniej kilkukrotnie. Po wyczyszczeniu, stalówkę pozostawiamy na około godzinę aż do całkowitego wyschnięcia.
